CHAPTER NINE
TONIGHT, ON THE SIX O’CLOCK NEWS
I am sitting in my cubicle at work on Tuesday morning wondering how this all happened to me. I mean, how did I go from leading this dull boring life to utter and complete chaos? Let’s recap, shall we? (1) I found a screenplay on the train while minding my own business, (2) read it and loved it. Problem? (3) my best friend also read it and thought I wrote it, (4) I didn’t exactly tell her that I didn’t and (5) now I have the real author wanting to meet me so that he could have it back, (6) I don’t want to give it back but know that I will because I always do the right thing. Am I missing anything else? Oh Yeah, I almost forget the fact that (7) I almost got fired, (8) blackmailed my boss into going to the Oscars and (9) am now waiting to get fitted for my dress for the night of my dreams which I can’t get excited about because, oh well, refer to # 1-8 above.
I can’t believe this Riley guy wants me to meet him. First of all, what kind of a writer doesn’t type up his work and back it up on a computer? I mean, hello! We are in the 21st century, the era of the Internet and all. There are flash drives, hard drives, discs and clouds to back up anything from songs to books and this guy still uses a journal to write down his work? That is so caveman of him. He must be ancient. I bet he is, although he certainly didn’t sound old over the phone.
In fact, he sounded quite nice when I really think about it. But then of course, the deranged and psychotic guys always sound rather nice over the phone. They have to be. How else can they lure unsuspecting and naïve girls like me out into the open, slip a date rape drug in their drink and stash them in the trunks of their cars only to find themselves living in the old man’s basement as a sex slave. I saw this whole expose on it the other day on TV. It was quite an eye opener. And that could be me! Well, whoever this Riley person is, I have made sure to protect myself.
First, I asked to meet him in a public place, a place where no one in his right mind would do anything criminal. A place that is safe and warm. A place that makes any girl feels at home. A place where no woman could easily be lured to her death. That’s right, I have asked this Riley guy to meet me at Crandalls, an upscale department store, in the woman’s shoe department during a big Thursday night sale. This guy doesn’t stand a chance if he tries to pull anything funny with me, not with all those very pointy high-heeled shoes just within my reach. In
